Traditional villages refer to those villages that have both tangible and intangible cultural heritage with historical, cultural, scientific, artistic, social and economic significance. The Center for Rural Culture Studies at Zhejiang University of Science and Technology was established in March 2014. It is the first academic institute that solely focuses on the problems and issues of rural conservation and of "Beautiful Village" construction. Informed by a global, comprehensive, and strategic perspective, the Center seeks to conduct in-depth fieldwork in traditional villages in Zhejiang Province, and to formulate a complete dossier on the basis of studies of the conservation standards and methods of their layouts, architectural remains and intangible cultural heritage while exploring the cultural implications of agriculture, ecology, ancestry, architecture and folklore. Aiming at transforming traditional villages of historical and cultural profundity into "Beautiful Villages"where tradition and modernity are mutually reinforcing each other, the Center pays close attention on methodological innovation, provides policy makes with policy consultation and technological support, and promotes domestic and international exchange of research achievements. The Center's areas of specialization include theory studies, application studies and policy consultation.
